What you need to know about this experience
A group excursion to Teide is a shared coach or minibus trip that takes you from the coast up to Teide National Park (Parque Nacional del Teide) with a guide and brings you back the same day. You travel with other people, the timetable and stops are set in advance, and you do not need a car.
This page explains how the day usually runs, the difference between going with or without the cable car on the same excursion, and what to ask so you do not spend half the visit waiting.

What a Teide excursion involves
The route climbs from the coast along the road that serves your pick-up area, passing mid-altitude villages and Canary pine forest before entering Las Cañadas del Teide. From the south, the usual route is via Vilaflor; from the north, through the La Orotava valley.
Inside the park, the excursion combines stretches by vehicle with short stops. The most common are a viewpoint in Las Cañadas, the Roques de GarcÃa (next to Roque Cinchado) and the cable car base station, which sits at 2,356 metres above sea level according to its operator.
The guide explains how the island formed, the types of lava and the high-mountain vegetation. At the base station there is usually free time for the café, the shop or a short walk.
The detail that most affects your day
Many shared excursions carry travellers with and without cable car tickets in the same vehicle. While some go up, the rest wait at the base station.
If the same departure mixes travellers with and without the cable car, the wait at the base station can be considerable. Ask how long it lasts and what alternatives will be available before you choose.
Before booking, ask: how long you will spend at the base station and what there is to do for anyone not going up.
Common formats
| Format | What sets it apart | Suits you if… |
|---|---|---|
| Without cable car | Road route and stops only | You want to see the park without going up, or someone in your group cannot use the cable car |
| With cable car | Includes the ride up to La Rambleta; it has its own page: Teide excursion with cable car | You want to see the park from above |
| Combined with other areas | Adds Masca, Garachico or the north | You would rather see several areas in one day |
| Private | Vehicle and guide for your group only: private Teide tour | There are several of you, you have children, or you want to set your own pace |
Where departures leave from
Most operators run departures from three main areas:
- South: Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and nearby.
- North: Puerto de la Cruz and the La Orotava valley.
- Metropolitan area: Santa Cruz and Candelaria, with fewer departure days in some offers.
Not every area has a daily departure. Pick-up is usually at meeting points and the exact time is given once the provider confirms the departure. If you are among the first to be collected, the journey to the park will take longer.
If you would rather go independently by public bus (guagua)
TITSA, Tenerife’s intercity public transport company, runs two routes up to the park: the 342 from Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, and the 348 from Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava. The service is limited and may vary by season, so check the current timetable on titsa.com before planning. No guide is included.
Who it suits
- Solo travellers or couples who want a reasonable price per person.
- Travellers without a car who would rather not drive on mountain roads.
- Anyone looking for a first guided visit to the park without much walking.
- Groups that do not need to change plans along the way.
Who it may not suit, and what to weigh up
- Families with young children, if the excursion includes long waits at the base station.
- Anyone who wants to hike or see the sunset: look at Teide sunset and stargazing hike.
- Anyone who wants to reach the crater: you need a guided ascent of Pico del Teide.
- People prone to motion sickness: every access road is winding and the vehicle does not stop on request.
- People with reduced mobility: check that the vehicle and stops are accessible.
How to choose the right excursion
- With or without the cable car? And if you do not go up, what do you do while the others do?
- Does the duration include the pick-up round? Some reviews mention that part of the time is spent collecting other passengers.
- Pick-up at your hotel or at a meeting point? How far away?
- What language is this particular departure in? The language can change depending on the day and the area.
- Which stops are planned and how long is each one?
- What happens if there is snow, a road closure or bad weather?
- What is the cancellation policy?

Safety, health and requirements
- Altitudee: the route runs above 2,000 metres. If you have heart or breathing problems, consult your doctor.
- Cable car: according to its operator, pregnant women, children under 3 and people with cardiovascular problems or reduced physical or motor mobility cannot ride. Closed shoes with grippy soles are required.
- Park rules: you may not take stones or plants, leave the marked trails or feed the wildlife.
- Luggage: some operators do not allow suitcases or large bags in the vehicle.
Weather and time of year
- In winter it can snow and some access roads may close; the excursion may change route or be cancelled.
- In summer the sun is very strong and there is little shade at the stops.
- A marked temperature difference from the coast is normal. Always bring a warm layer.
If you go up from the north, it is common to pass through fog between 600 and 1,500 metres before emerging above the sea of clouds.
Price: what it depends on
We do not give a figure because there are not enough directly comparable offers on the same basis: pick-up area, duration and whether the cable car is included all vary.
These factors determine the price per person:
- With or without the cable car: this is the biggest difference.
- Pick-up area: some areas have fewer departures or a supplement.
- Language and season.
- Resident or child rates, which require proof of eligibility.
Always compare the final price per person and everything it includes.
What to bring
- A jacket or jumper.
- Comfortable, closed shoes.
- Sunglasses, a cap and sun cream.
- Water and a snack.
- Proof of eligibility if you have paid a resident or child rate.
