Before you choose
What you need to know about this experience
A private stargazing tour in Tenerife is a guided astronomy session for your group only, usually in Teide National Park, with telescopes reserved for you. Depending on the offer, it includes pick-up from your accommodation, the sunset, something to eat and warm clothing.
What you pay extra for is time and attention: no queues at the telescope, a pace suited to your group and the option to choose the timing. Here we explain when it is worth it and what to ask.
At a glance
| Aspect | What to expect |
|---|---|
| What it is | Guided sky observation for your group only |
| Where | Usually in Teide National Park, at around 2,000–2,400 m |
| Timing | At sunset or in full darkness; some offers leave verand thete for deep-sky viewing |
| Group | From couples to groups of more than ten people, depending on the offer |
| Transport | Included in some offers; in others you meet at a point in the park |
| Usual extras | Picnic or tapas, warm coats, photos of the sky |
| If it is cloudy | Date change or refund in several offers. Check this |
| Price | Per group, with price bands according to the number of people. Depends on the provider |
What changes compared with a shared tour
| Aspect | Shared | Private |
|---|---|---|
| Telescope | Turns with many people | Reserved for your group |
| Explanation | Standard for the whole group | Adapted to your level and interests |
| Timing | Fixed | Flexible: sunset or full darkness |
| Pick-up | Route around several hotels | Direct from your accommodation, if included |
| Language | The one set for the departure | The one you agree, if the guide speaks it |
| Atmosphere | Mixed group | Relaxed, suitable for special occasions |
In some reviews of large excursions, travellers complain about dozens of people sharing a few telescopes. The private format avoids exactly that.
What happens
- Pick-up or meeting at the agreed time.
- Sunset, if you have chosen the afternoon slot.
- Something to eat: picnic, tapas or nothing, depending on the offer.
- Naked-eye observation with a laser pointer: constellations, bright stars and, on dark nights, the Milky Way.
- Telescopes with the objects visible that night.
- Photos of the sky or of the group, in some offers.
- Return.
Formats and variations
| Variation | Suits you if… |
|---|---|
| Private at sunset | You want the sunset and the first hours of the night |
| Private in full darkness | You are interested in the deep sky and do not mind a late night |
| Private with a meeting point in the park | You have a car and want to keep the price down |
| Private with pick-up | You do not want to drive a mountain road at night |
| Special occasion | Anniversary, proposal or birthday: ask what can be arranged |
| Private with an observatory visit | You also want the scientific side by day: Teide Observatory visit |
Where it takes place
Most private tours observe in or near Teide National Park, at about 2,000–2,400 metres, above the sea of clouds. The guide usually chooses the exact spot on the night, depending on wind, cloud and other groups.
If someone should not go up to high altitude, ask about lower-altitude alternatives, such as the Barranco de Badajoz.
Who it suits
- Couples looking for a quiet evening or a special occasion.
- Families with children who need their own pace.
- Groups of friends who want to share the cost.
- Enthusiasts who want to ask questions and take their time at the telescope.
- Travellers staying far from the usual pick-up areas.
Who it may not suit, and what to weigh up
- One or two people on a tight budget: a small group can offer a good experience for less.
- Anyone who wants to photograph the sky with their own camera: see Teide astrophotography.
- People with heart or breathing problems: consult your doctor because of the altitude.
How to choose well
- Is the price per group? Up to how many people?
- Is pick-up included? From which areas? Some offers charge a supplement outside the south.
- Which telescopes, and how many?
- What training does the guide have? Some work with guides accredited by the Starlight Foundation or with astrophysicists; also ask about their official tourist guide licence.
- What happens if it is cloudy? Date change, refund, or does it go ahead anyway?
- What is the cancellation deadline? For private formats it may be several days.
- Are food, drinks and warm coats included?
- If it is a special occasion, what can and cannot be arranged? Remember that a national park has rules: fires and loud music are not allowed.
What is usually included and what to check
| Item | Usual practice | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Guide and telescopes | Included | Number and type |
| Pick-up | In some offers | Areas and supplements |
| Picnic or tapas | In some offers | Diets and drinks |
| Coats, hats and gloves | In some offers | Sizes |
| Photos | In some offers | Whether they are guaranteed |
| Duration | Several hours | Actual observation time |
Safety and requirements
- Cold: in the park at night it can be very cold, even in summer.
- Altitudee: over 2,000 metres.
- Night driving: if you go on your own, drive carefully because of the bends and possible animals on the road.
- Park rules: do not leave the authorised areas, light fires or leave litter.
The Moon, clouds and when to go
- New Moon: the best option for the Milky Way and galaxies.
- Full Moon: less deep sky, but the Moon through a telescope is impressive.
- Cloud and calima: they may force a change of date.
With a private tour it is easier to fit the date to the Moon phase. If you are flexible, say so when you request information.
Price: what it depends on
We do not give a reference figure: the private offers reviewed are not comparable, because some include pick-up, food and warm coats while others are just the session in the park.
The price of a private tour depends on:
- The number of people, with price bands per group.
- Whether pick-up is included, and from where.
- The duration and timing.
- Food, drinks and extras.
What to bring
- Winter clothing, even if it is hot on the coast.
- Closed shoes.
- A torch with a red light.
- A camera or phone with a tripod, if you want to try taking photos.
- Everything you need for the special occasion, if there is one, in line with the park rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a private tour and a small-group tour?
On a private tour only your group goes and the telescopes are for you. In a small group you share with a few other people.
How many people can go?
It depends on the provider: from couples to large groups. The price usually works in bands.
Is hotel pick-up included?
In some offers, yes, especially in the south. In others you meet directly in the park.
Can a marriage proposal be arranged?
Many providers help with this. Ask what they can arrange and respect the national park rules.
What happens if it is cloudy?
It depends on the provider. Several offers change the date or refund the price.
Can a young child come?
Private tours are usually more flexible, but check: the cold and the late hour are the main limits.
What is the best date?
Close to the new Moon for the deep sky. On a private tour you can adjust the date more easily.
Are photos included?
In some offers the guide takes photos of the sky or the group. Ask whether they are guaranteed.
