What you need to know about this experience
A Teide and Masca jeep safari is a day trip in a 4×4 vehicle, driven by a driver-guide, that climbs into Teide National Park and comes down the mountain roads of western Tenerife to the hamlet of Masca. You travel in small groups per vehicle, with several stops for photos and explanations.
It is worth knowing one thing from the start: the route follows tarmac roads, not dirt tracks. What changes compared with a coach is the size of the vehicle, the group and the feeling of being closer to the landscape.

What happens
The typical route from the south climbs via Arona and Vilaflor, the highest municipality in Spain, to Teide National Park. The longest stop is there, usually at the Roques de GarcÃa, with views of Teide and Pico Viejo.
The route then descends westwards via ChÃo, Tamaimo or Santiago del Teide and continues along the TF-436 road to the Masca viewpoint and the hamlet itself. The return usually goes via Arguayo or Guide de Isora.
The driver explains the geology, history and landscape on the way and at each stop.
Usual stops
| Area | What it offers |
|---|---|
| Vilaflor | Mid-altitude village surrounded by pine forest |
| Teide National Park | Roques de GarcÃa, lava flows, views of the volcano |
| ChÃo or Aripe viewpoint | Views of the lava flows in the west |
| Santiago del Teide | Meal stop on some offers |
| Masca viewpoint and hamlet | Ravine and traditional houses among the cliffs |
The order and the specific stops depend on the provider and the departure area.

Where tours start
Most departures pick up on the south coast: Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Playa ParaÃso, Los Gigantes, Golf del Sur or El Médano, depending on the provider. Some offers use a meeting point if your hotel is outside the area.
There are fewer departures from the north, and some only run on certain days.
Masca: regulated access
The TF-436 is the only road into Masca. It is narrow and very busy in high season.
- Since May 2025, the DGT (Spain’s traffic authority) has banned buses longer than 10 metres from the TF-436. Large coaches cannot reach the hamlet; small vehicles can.
- Since 30 July 2026, the Cabildo has been running access controls into Masca between 09:00 and 16:00 while the wildfire risk alert lasts. During the controls, entry by vehicles for tourist or leisure purposes is restricted. Residents, workers, public transport, emergency services and vehicles with express authorisation may pass.
Before booking, ask whether the provider can enter Masca on your date or whether the route switches to a viewpoint outside the village. This situation can change from one week to the next.
Who it suits
- Travellers who want to see Teide and the west of the island in a single day without driving.
- Small groups who prefer a compact vehicle to a coach.
- Anyone who values photo stops and the driver’s commentary.
Who it may not suit, and what to weigh up
- Anyone prone to motion sickness: the route has hundreds of bends, especially the descent to Masca.
- Anyone looking for off-road driving: this is a road trip; you only drive yourself on a quad safari or a buggy tour.
- Anyone who wants to hike the Masca gorge: that is a different activity: hiking the Masca gorge.
- People with back problems: the rear seats of some off-road vehicles are less comfortable.
- If the vehicle has an open roof, bear in mind the sun and the wind.
How to choose well
- How many people travel in each vehicle? Is the driver also the guide?
- Is the 4×4 closed or open-top?
- Does it enter Masca under the current controls, or only go to the viewpoint?
- Which stops are there and how long is each one?
- What language is the commentary in? In small vehicles, languages are sometimes mixed.
- Where and when do you eat? Is it included?
- What is the cancellation policy? In the offers reviewed, it ranges from 24 to 48 hours.

- In the west and in Masca, the heat and sun can be intense in summer.
- In summer and during wildfire alerts, access restrictions may be activated for natural areas such as Teno.
Price: what it depends on
We do not give a reference figure: the offers reviewed combine duration, departure area and stops in different ways, and most are sold through intermediaries.
The price per person depends on:
- The route: half day or full day.
- The pick-up area.
- Whether a meal is included.
- The language and the season.
What to bring
- A jacket for Teide and light clothing for the coast.
- A cap, sunglasses and sun protection, especially if the vehicle is open-top.

Frequently asked questions
Does the jeep safari go on dirt tracks?
No. The usual route follows paved mountain roads. The 4×4 means a smaller vehicle and a small group, not off-road driving.
How long does it last?
About 7 hours for the Teide + Masca version. There are half-day versions to Teide only.
Can you get into Masca?
It depends on the date. Since 30 July 2026 there have been access controls during periods of wildfire risk. Ask the provider whether their route enters the hamlet.
Is lunch included?
Usually not. There is a stop to eat at your own expense.
Is it suitable if I get carsick?
It is a route with many bends. If you get carsick easily, consider the half-day version or a route with less mountain road.
Can children come?
Yes, in general. Check that the vehicle has a child restraint system suitable for their age.
Do you go up by cable car?
It is not usually included. If you are interested, see the Teide excursion with cable car.
