What you need to know about this experience

A guided tour of La Laguna is a walking tour of the historic centre of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a World Heritage city, with a guide who explains its history, street layout and buildings. The old town is flat, largely pedestrianised and easy to cover in one or two hours.

There are three main ways to do it: the free municipal tour, the free tour with a voluntary tip, and a private guide. This page helps you choose according to your group, your language and the time you have.

Why La Laguna is a World Heritage Site

San Cristóbal de La Laguna was founded in 1497 by the Adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo. According to the Town Council, its street plan was laid out with navigation instruments and measuring cords, and this model of a city without walls was later repeated in cities in the Americas.

UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1999. Its old town preserves streets from the original layout, manor houses with courtyards, churches and convents.

What you see on a typical tour

  • Plaza del Adelantado, with the Town Hall, the market and historic buildings.
  • Calle de la Carrera and Calle San Agustín, with mansions and courtyards.
  • La Laguna Cathedral.
  • Iglesia de la Concepción and its tower.
  • Teatro Leal.
  • Historic houses, such as the Casa de los Capitanes Generales, home to the tourist office.

The exact route depends on the guide and the duration.

Three formats compared

Format How it works Suits you if… Bear in mind

Free tour A tour of about 2 hours; at the end you pay the tip you think fair You want more time and a lively tone The guide lives on tips; the group can be large

Who it suits

  • Travellers interested in history, architecture and urban planning.
  • Cruise passengers with a short port call: La Laguna is close to the port of Santa Cruz.
  • Families, because the route is flat.
  • Groups, schools or associations, with a pre-arranged visit.

Who it may not suit, and what to weigh up

  • Anyone who wants to go inside many buildings: some buildings have their own opening hours or separate tickets.
  • Anyone looking for nature: combine the city with Anaga on the Anaga and La Laguna excursion.
  • Rainy days: La Laguna has a cooler, more humid climate than the coast.

How to choose well

  1. Which language do you need, and on which days is there a tour in that language?
  2. How long does it last and what does the route include?
  3. Do you go inside any buildings? Do you have to pay for entry?
  4. How many people are in the group?
  5. Is the guide licensed as a Canary Islands tourist guide?
  6. Where is the meeting point?
  7. If it is private, is the price per group and does it include taxes?
