Hiking in Tenerife can mean walking through a humid laurel forest, following a ravine, crossing a pine forest or discovering a high-mountain volcanic landscape. That is why distance alone is not enough: elevation gain, terrain, weather and access vary a great deal between areas.
Three landscapes to start with
Hiking in Anaga
Laurel forest, rural paths and rugged terrain in the north-east.
Regulated gorgeMasca gorge
A demanding route whose logistics and access need to be checked carefully.
North-westHiking in Teno
Hamlets, ravines and rural landscapes, with routes of varying difficulty.
How to read the real level
Two routes of the same distance can feel very different. Always ask about the total elevation gain, the type of surface, exposure, the planned pace and the actual walking time. If there are children, previous injuries or little hiking experience, explain this before accepting a proposal.
Access matters too. Some routes start far from your accommodation, need to be coordinated with public transport or have regulated places and times. A useful description should clearly separate the walk from the transfers.
When a guide adds value
- When you do not know the terrain or the weather changes quickly.
- When you want tor aderstand the flora, geology, traditional uses and landscape.
- When the group needs to adapt distance, pace or stops.
- When there is regulated access, logistics to combine or alternatives to decide on the day.
What to check before setting off
Confirm footwear, water, a warm layer, sun protection, the meeting point, insurance cover and what happens if the weather forces a change of route. Do not choose on the photo alone: look for a route that suits the least experienced person in the group.
