The same island and the same ferry, but in a small vehicle with a small group. What is different from the coach excursion.

What you need to know about this experience

A La Gomera jeep safari is a day trip that combines the ferry from Los Cristianos with a tour of the island in a 4×4 vehicle and a small group, instead of by coach. The itinerary usually includes Garajonay National Park (Parque Nacional de Garajonay) and several viewpoints.

The ferry, the timetables and the time available on the island are the same as on the standard La Gomera day trip. What changes is the vehicle, the group size and, sometimes, the roads covered.

As in Tenerife, the term jeep safari does not mean off-road driving: the route follows paved mountain roads, with the odd track on some routes.

What you usually see

  • San Sebastián de La Gomera, when the ferry arrives.
  • Garajonay National Park, with its laurel forest.
  • Viewpoints over ravines and rock pinnacles (roques).
  • Hamlets in the north, depending on the route.

Who it suits

  • Small groups and couples who would rather not travel by coach.
  • Anyone who wants more room for stops and photos.
  • Travellers who already know Tenerife and want something different.

Who it may not suit, and what to weigh up

  • Anyone prone to motion sickness: La Gomera’s roads have many bends, and you feel them more in a 4×4.
  • Tight budget: the coach is usually cheaper.
  • Back problems: the rear seats of some off-road vehicles are harder.

How to choose well

  1. Is the ferry included?
  2. How many people per vehicle?
  3. What route does it take, and how many stops?
  4. Is food included?
  5. Is there pick-up from your hotel?
  6. What happens if the ferry is cancelled?

What to bring

  • Identity document or passport for the ferry.
  • Light jacket for Garajonay.
  • Comfortable shoes.
  • Sun protection and water.
  • Motion sickness remedy, if you need one.
