Before you choose

What you need to know about this experience

A guided mountain bike route in Tenerife can be very different depending on the format: from a descent in which a van takes you up to the summit and you ride down with hardly any pedalling, to enduro rides with technical sections in the northern forests or cross country routes on tracks and trails.

The island has a huge elevation difference between the sea and the National Park, and this shapes almost every route. This page helps you choose the right format for your level.

Formats

Format What it means Suits you if…
Descent from the summit You go up by van and ride down, in many offers on a tarmac road You want scenery and little effort
Enduro with shuttle Technical descents on trails, with a support vehicle You have experience and good technique
Cross country or tracks Pedalling up and down You are looking for a workout
Mountain e-bike routes Electric assistance on the climbs See the e-bike route

A useful warning: the descent most commonly sold to tourists is usually on the road, not on technical trails. If you want dirt and jumps, ask specifically for enduro.

Where you ride

  • Around Teide National Park: high-mountain tracks and roads; inside the park you may only ride on authorised routes.
  • La Esperanza and the north: pine forests with flowing and technical trails.
  • Anaga: laurel forest landscape; always check which tracks are permitted.
  • La Orotava and Vilaflor: rural paths and pine forest.

In protected areas there are restrictions on riding; the guide should know them.

What happens

  1. Pick-up or meeting and adjusting the bike to your height.
  2. Explanation of the route, braking and body position.
  3. Uplift by vehicle, if the format includes it.
  4. Guided ride with stops.
  5. Return to the starting point.

Who it suits

  • Cyclists of all levels, choosing the format carefully.
  • Families and groups, on easy descents.
  • Experienced riders, on enduro.

Who it may not suit, and what to weigh up

  • Anyone who has never ridden a mountain bike: start with an easy descent or an e-bike.
  • Back, wrist or knee problems.
  • Fear of speed on descents.

How to choose well

  1. What format exactly and how much pedalling is there?
  2. Is it on tarmac, tracks or trails?
  3. What technical level is required?
  4. Are a helmet and protective gear included?
  5. Which bike is used? Full suspension, hardtail or e-bike.
  6. Is there a support vehicle?
  7. How many participants per guide?
  8. Is insurance included?

Safety

  • Always wear a helmet and, on enduro, protective gear.
  • Keep your distance on descents.
  • On the road, follow the traffic rules: long descents have sections with cars.
  • Check your brakes before setting off and say if you notice anything odd.

Weather

  • It can be cold and windy at the summit even if it is hot on the coast: on a descent you lose altitude and gain temperature.
  • In the rain, dirt trails become tricky and some routes are cancelled.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need experience for an MTB route in Tenerife?

It depends on the format: there are accessible descents and enduro routes only for riders with good technique.

Is the descent from Teide on dirt?

In most tourist offers, it is on a tarmac road. Ask if you want trails.

Can you ride on any trail?

No. There are restrictions in protected areas; the guide should know them.

Are the bike and helmet included?

Yes, on guided routes.

When is the best time?

You can ride all year round; in summer, early morning is better because of the heat.
